Between the Lives Blog Tour - Jess's Favourite Scene + Giveaway!

Hello everyone! For my stop in Between the Lives's blog tour, Jess is here to share one of her favourite scenes from the book. I would also like to thank Amanda from Harper Collins Australia for putting this blog tour together!

PS: Don't worry, it's non-spoilery ;)

Sabine is in her Roxbury life and working at her parent's pharmacy after just making a discovery that might change both of her lives. It is also the first time she meets Ethan:

When I got to the drugstore, I said hello to Mom and the pharmacist Denise, then I wriggled awkwardly – thanks to my cast – into one of the white jackets that were supposed to make us look more ‘medically informed’. When Mom and Denise weren’t looking, I slid my notebook onto the counter. I kept a magazine resting on top of it, so when customers came in they wouldn’t see the list.

1. Test blood theory – exterior physical reaction
2. Test hair – pigment and removal
3. Test laxatives – internal physical response
4. Test poison – consciousness and organ failure

If points one through four achieve a successful outcome, proceed to next point.

My hand trembled as I wrote number five.

5.      Choose

I chewed on a fingernail, staring at what I’d just written. Could it really be that simple? I didn’t know, but even so ... I crossed out the last point. It was too early for that. Points one through four first. Then I’d worry about what would happen ... next.
Giddy from the rush of thinking such forbidden thoughts, I did what I’d really come here for: I stocked up on everything I was going to need, waiting until Denise went on her break to grab some items from behind her counter. By the time I returned to the register, someone was waiting and looked like he’d been there for a while.
‘Sorry for the wait. What can I get you?’ I was sure I was flushed from guilt. I hoped he hadn’t seen me shoplifting from my own family’s store.
The guy, who’d had his back to me, spun around and glared. I let out a little gasp before I could stop myself. He was probably in his early twenties – and he was undeniably hot. Trouble and attitude radiated from him. And there was something ... more. In his eyes. They were startling: dark blue and intense, with a depth you didn’t normally see. Eyes that could too easily see through someone.
I set my shoulders and got ready to deny any accusations. But he just gave me an up-and-down look I couldn’t read – other than to know it wasn’t flattering – and shoved a handful of crumpled scripts towards me.
‘How long?’ he asked, his full lips set in a straight line.
I gave him a tight smile as I sifted through over a dozen scripts, more than a few for heavy-duty medications. That explained the aggressive, defensive attitude: drug dealer.
‘These are going to take a while,’ I told him. ‘Since there are so many and they’re not all in the one name.’ Hint: I know what you’re doing. ‘The pharmacist will need to see ID and call it through for approval.’ After which we’ll ring the police.
I kept a firm hold of the scripts, expecting him to snatch them and make a run for it. But he simply shrugged, leaned against the counter and folded his arms.
‘Just call the Roxbury Medical Clinic and give them the prescription codes and my ID details. They’ll verify.’ He slipped a driver’s licence out of his wallet and tossed it on the counter before narrowing his eyes at me. ‘How long?’
This guy was an ass. And thankfully I wasn’t in Wellesley today; I didn’t have to behave. I sucked in a breath and was about to tell him to take a hike when Denise came back from her break.
‘Ethan!’ she said, looking delighted. ‘What are you doing here?’
Drug guy shrugged, sending me a sly look. ‘Being interrogated.’

Angel Evolution Blog Interview + Giveaway!

Angel Evolution (Evolution Trilogy #1)
Genre: Young Adult
Pages: 366
Published: October 17th 2011
Author: David Estes
Source: Author for an Honest Review
Format: E-book

Summary from Goodreads:
Angel Evolution- the first book in the young adult fantasy trilogy: The Evolution Trilogy... When Taylor meets Gabriel at college, she is in awe of the subtle glow that surrounds him. No one else, not even her best friend, seems to notice. Something about him scares her. Is all as it appears? While Taylor struggles for answers, she finds herself in the middle of a century old war centered on one miraculous revelation: evolution.

Well, hello there everyone! I've got a special person in the blog today! It's David Estes, the author of Angel Evolution, the first book in the Evolution trilogy! Before that, can we please just look at the cover once more and adore it? Gorgeous right? Now give a round of applause to welcome David Estes, an American born author who currently lives in Australia with his lovely wife!

David has kindly agreed to answer my questions for the interview! Let's see his answers to them.

1. What are your inspirations in writing Angel Evolution?
To be honest, it just popped into my head one day.  I have been an avid reader my entire life (I even won a reading contest at school when I was little once), and I always wanted to give writing a try, but felt like I needed a “Big Idea.”  Really that was just an excuse to put it off though—I know that now.  When I met my wife, my perspective began changing.  She encouraged me to give it a shot with whatever idea came into my head, and when I had three weeks off between jobs, I thought of the initial idea for Angel Evolution.  Yes, Angel Evolution was my first book and I took it all the way through to self-publishing, although I must apologize for its imperfections—I have since written 7 other books and have improved drastically as a writer.

Anyway, I fell in love with writing in less than a day of really trying it.  Even after I started my new job I kept it up, writing a half-hour on the ferry to work, an hour at lunch, and a half-hour on the ferry back home.  I was averaging 2 to 3,000 words per day, which allowed me to finish Angel Evolution in less than a month.  So I started a new project, leaving the Evolution Trilogy unfinished.  But I always came back to it, finishing the trilogy and self-publishing it about 13 months after I first put fingers to keyboard.

2. Which character did you enjoy writing most?
Great question.  In Angel Evolution I liked writing from Gabriel’s perspective.  In the first book he’s such a conflicted character, who really can’t decide what’s right and what’s wrong.  I thought it was fun to start him as a pretty evil character and slowly morph him into something better (although I won’t give away whether he ever makes it to the good side!)

In Demon Evolution I preferred writing Taylor’s character because I think her personality picks up quite a bit.  She is a sarcastic person by nature and she has quite a few zany thoughts that show her good sense of humor a bit.

Lastly, my favorite character of the whole trilogy doesn’t really come out until the third book, Archangel Evolution, although he is involved in all three books.  Gabriel’s brother, David (named after me, but hopefully not like me at all!), is probably the most interesting (but very scary) character.  I’ve had one of my beta readers suggest I do a spin off series that is all from David’s point of view.  I really hope that readers decide to read all the way through to the end of the series if only to get a chance to appreciate David.

3. Did you do any research before writing Angel Evolution?
Very little.  Unlike some authors, I really do not like research and much prefer to create a place from scratch.  However, as I got into some of the other books in the Evolution Trilogy, I have some scenes that take place in New York City so I had to do some very small amounts of research on where places were located.  But I much prefer to create worlds of my own, similar to the way Suzanne Collins did in The Hunger Games.

4.  If Angel Evolution was to be a movie and you could choose the casts, which actor or actress would you pick to play the main characters?
I’ve done a few interviews and this is the hardest question I’ve been asked.  My wife, Adele, and I have talked about this several times just for fun.  I’ve also had quite a few people say that my books would make good movies.  Honestly, I think I would go with actors/actresses who are relatively unknown, similar to the way Twilight was casted.  I wouldn’t want a hugely popular actor or actress to come in and reshape the characters based on their own image.  I would prefer it if my characters shaped the actors, if that makes sense.  So I know I didn’t answer your question, but I think the actors/actresses would be unknowns who would hopefully become known after starring in my movies!!

5.  During spare time, do you read YA books as well? If so, please name a few recent reads that you really enjoy.
Absolutely, I love almost every genre of books, with a particular fondness for YA.  Given I am currently living in Australia, I thought it made sense to read the Tomorrow When the War Began series, which was written by an Australian, John Marsden.  I’m on book six and loving the series!  I have also recently read the Fallen series and Hush Hush, to see how my books stack up to other series about angels and demons.  I loved them both, but think my books are very very different to them.  Lastly, I just have to mention The Hunger Games because it is one of my favorite books of all time.  I haven’t read it recently, but loved it from start to finish.

6.  Quick question: Chocolate or chips?
If you’re referring to chips as in what we Americans call French fries, I would choose the chips.  I love hot fries with Heinz Ketchup (I’m from Pittsburgh where Heinz is headquartered so I am biased to them!)  If you mean potato chips, then I would probably go chocolate, although I do love Red Rocks Deli sweet chili and sour cream chips!!

Thanks to David, I have 10 E-books of Angel Evolution to giveaway! TRUST ME, YOU WANT THIS BOOK! I REALLY ENJOYED IT! Just fill out the form below to join. It's easy, all you have to do is enter your name & email. The rest is just extra entries if you want to. Thank you for checking out this post and good luck!

The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near - misses end with the French kiss Anna - and readers - have long awaited?

1 Month Blog Anniversary + Birthday + Giveaway + Blog Interview: Cat Patrick

1 month ago, Celine, a girl who loved reading books kept on reading without knowing how to share her love for it. She find it hard to discuss with others who are not interested. She never checks on reviews of the book she's reading and when she did, she is exposed to the world we know as blogging and tweeting. She enjoyed bloggers' reviews of different books she's reading that she decided to become one too. She did not know how to blog but came up with a flower name she really loved for her blog. She finds out about weekly memes, had the chance to chat with her favourite authors and also tweet them. She feels so happy. She also reviewed books that she reads and became friends with many bloggers. What an amazing virtual life. She has been doing this for a month. A month may not be a year but it's a start. A month means a lot. A month is a beginning to something better. It's also her birthday too. 18/10/11. And she would like to share her blog facts:

1. Forget-me-not is a name of her favourite flower [picture below]. It's a purple colour and she came across the name when she reads a manga a long time ago.
Pretty flowers, pretty name
2. The blog currently has 29 followers. A pretty good start for a month of blogging. Will it increase? Who knows.

3. She participates in weekly memes of:
 Monday: Cover Crazy
Tuesday: Top Ten Tuesday
Wednesday: Waiting on Wednesday
Thursday: Booking Through Thursday
Friday: Follow Friday
Saturday: She tried to find a weekly meme for this day but she can't find one that she is interested in.
Sunday: In My Mailbox

4. The blog currently has 1565 pageviews.

5. According to the blog stats, her most popular posts in the blog are:
a. Top Ten Tuesday #2
b. Booking Through Thursday #2
c. Upcoming Giveaway: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa (It's still on you know in case you guys forget about it!)
d. My sixth book review: The Iron King
e. In My Mailbox #2

6. The first book review she posted on the blog was Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins which she is still so obssessed about. [Plus the super duper swoon-worthy Etienne St. Clair]

7. Since blogging, she has been exposed to different genres of YA book. She would like to thank all bloggers for that!

Some things you don't know about Celine:

1. She has so many favourite authors that she can't type it all up

2. Her favourite YA realistic author is Stephanie Perkins, thanks to her Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door which she is so obssessed about

She loves this picture! Found it in google and she'd like to thank whoever it is for creating such a beautiful version of Anna and the French Kiss!
3. From the YA realistic books she read, her biggest crush is on Etienne St. Clair. But Cricket Bell also has place in her heart.

4. Her biggest crush on guys from YA paranormal books: This is hard. She can't choose one. Instead, she'll choose 5: Jace from TMI, Will from TID, Ren from Tiger's curse, Ash from The Iron Fey series and Four from Divergent. She forgets the rest she used to had a big crush on. It's too many, she complains to her head.
5. She wanted to join My Book Boyfriend weekly meme but she finds it so difficult to find the right image of someone that looks like her book boyfriend. Instead, she postponed it until she finds the right image but promised herself that Monsieur Etienne St. Clair would be her first one.

6. She is currently studying French. She loves France, French and Paris, all thanks to Anna and the French Kiss and Die for Me. She dreams of going there too.

7. She loves reading manga and watching anime. Used to be her first obssession after books.

8. She enjoys watching tv shows. She is regularly watches The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl and Glee TV shows.

9. Her first live chat with an author was hosted on Mundie Moms with Leigh Fallon, the author of Carrier of the Mark. She finds Leigh Fallon very funny and she actually won a signed tee. Although sadly, she hasn't read the book yet because her order is not arriving! She also had a live chat with Colleen Houck from Tiger's curse who answered her questions through the video. This was her first experience.

10. Her birthday is on 18th of October. The same birthday as Zac Efron which she recently knew.

11. She loves chocolate so much. Any type of chocolate.
12.. She doesn't know what else to say. She thinks it might be boring for the readers to read these facts. But she'd like to thank those who have read up to this far. She'd like to thank the 29 followers of her blog and thank all authors who replied her tweets and write all the amazing books.

NOW! It's the giveaway time!

Before that, we have Cat Patrick here for the day! Celine sent her a request for her first author interview in her blog and sent some questions for Cat to answer! Here we go!

1. What is your favourite part of the book which you really enjoyed to write?
The beginning of a book is always my favorite--it's like a fresh start, full of possibilities.

2. What is your favourite character of the book and why?
That's like asking me to choose which child I love the most! :) In all seriousness, I love each of them for their contribution they bring to the story. But of course London and Luke are my faves. I also really like side characters like the office lady with the cats in her nail polish.

3. Forgotten might be a movie! If you could choose the cast, who would you like to cast as the characters of the book?
Yes it might! Yippee! Well, so far, Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit is attached to play London, and I could not be happier about that. She's amazing. As for the others, I'll leave that very tough job to the casting director. That said, based on looks alone, I'd vote for someone who looks like a young Chris Hemsworth for Luke.

4. Tell us a little bit more about your next book, Revived?
As a little girl, Daisy Appleby was killed in a school bus crash. Moments after the accident, she was brought back to life.

A secret government agency has developed a drug called Revive that can bring people back from the dead, and Daisy Appleby, a test subject, has been Revived five times in fifteen years. Daisy takes extraordinary risks, knowing that she can beat death, but each new death also means a new name, a new city, and a new life. When she meets Matt McKean, Daisy begins to question the moral implications of Revive, and as she discovers the agency's true goals, she realizes she's at the center of something much larger -- and more sinister -- than she ever imagined.

5. Do you have any tips for aspiring authors?
Set aside a time to write every day, so that everyone in your life knows it's a priority for you. Write without self-editing...editing is for later. And finally, if you're stuck, walk away for a while. I've let books sit for six months when they weren't working. Often if you come back and read with a fresh eye, it's clearer where to take the book next.

Note: If you haven't read Forgotten, now's your time to do so! And we all can't wait for the movie too!

Thank you Cat Patrick for the time! And finally, time for the giveaway!
Celine is giving out 2 Ebooks of Forgotten by Cat Patrick! All you have to do is fill out the Rafflecopter form below! It's her first time using it so please leave commens about it too!
Note: Please also leave a comment about who you'd like to be cast as Luke Henry in the movie if you have read the book! Thankies :D
