My ninth book review: Divergent

Divergent
Genre: Young Adult
Pages: 489
Published: May 3rd 2011
Author: Veronica Roth

Summary from Goodreads:
Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances.

My review:
I  hate the story of how I found this book. I seriously doubted this book every time I saw it in the bookstore because when I read the summary, I was not that intrigued although there were book blurbs from Melissa Marr and Kiersten White, two of my favourite authors. But then, seeing all the positive reviews on goodreads and the high rating it had, I just bought it because I was curious. And I totally REGRET I didn't buy it earlier! I really wanted to have a good story of how I found this book. REGRET. REGRET. REGRET. I've never read such a good dystopian novel ever since The Hunger Games! I actually somehow like Divergent better because the romance was a little bit better compared to The Hunger Games.

Divergent tells the story of Beatrice a.k.a Tris. In the world of Divergent, the society is divided into 5 factions: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice's family is from the Abnegation faction. But when she reached sixteen, she had to choose one of the factions. She chose Dauntless faction instead of Abnegation and she changed her name from Beatrice to Tris. And that's how the journey and struggle of Tris in the Dauntless faction begins. I CAN'T STOP READING! I just sat on my bed reading this for hours and managed to finish in a day! After reading it, I just stared at my wall thinking about how amazing this book was and my regrets of not founding it earlier. Oh, and not to mention FOUR! I kept on swooning over him. I've read summaries from different people and they mentioned four the whole time. And what a coincidence that my favourite number is FOUR! Four is the coolest nick name ever! If you read the book, you'll get why this character is called four! This book flows really well and every page is always exciting! The chemistry and love between Tris and Four is just so sweet. When I read the summary, I just didn't realize that Four was going to be in this book. The summary only stated about Tris, so I wasn't really expecting a romance book, but more like a serious dystopian novel. I was really WRONG! I just don't know what to say anymore. After finishing this book, I re-read my favourite section about Tris and Four again and again. It's really interesting for Veronica Roth to come up with the idea of having 5 factions and I really want to be a part of Dauntless (but not the self-less training. I don't think I can handle that!).

I don't know why many people compare it to The Hunger Games. Each dystopian novel is unique and although they have the same genre doesn't mean they have to be the same! This is really different to The Hunger Games. It still carries the theme about survival of a heroine character but that's all. The romance, the action, the world is different. I would love to blabber more about this but I don't want to give any spoilers!

Overall: Dauntless! What a great debut and dystopian novel! One of the best book debuts I've read in 2011! Can't wait for Insurgent next year. The cover is so amazing. Check it out: http://veronicarothbooks.blogspot.com/2011/09/insurgent-cover.html. Oh! Oh! Oh! There's a little joke about the third book and I laughed so hard I cry because it's just so funny! I'll just post the picture down after I give my 5 Forget-me-not flowers rating for this awesome book! You guys should really read this book if you haven't or you'll REGRET like me!

5 Forget-me-not flowers for Divergent!

This is just the funniest thing ever! : Detergent : One choice can disinfect you!!! :D

  2. Dude, when I got this book, I was like, "How am I going to read this?" Because there's a lot of pages. I put it aside because I think I was reading something else. Anyways, when I started reading it, I couldn't stop. I stayed up all night! And Four. Four. I love how his vibe; all mean and cold but he's not. I would've preferred not to know his real name because Four just sounds so cool, you know? When I read his real name, I went, "Uhh...I liked Four better." I hope Tris refers to him by his nickname because it gives him more of an edge...
