Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Rachel of Parajunkee and Alison of Alison Can Read.
This week's featured question is:
Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?
My answer:
Yes I have! An example would be Glow by Amy Kathleen-Ryan. I was absolutely curious of this book and have been reading mixed reviews so I bought the book to see what I think about it myself. I end up hating the book because I absolutely did not enjoy it but still felt like I had to finish the book because I bought it.
It's a gamble when you read books that have bad reviews. Sometimes, I really love books that no one else likes, and other times, I hate the same books as everyone else.

I haven't bought one because of a bad review, but I've definitely read them. A great review makes me want the book and a bad review has no real effect on my desire to read it.

I have heard mixed review for Glow, as well, but I will probably still read it! New follower :0

ReplyDeleteI read books with bad reviews but, I don't purposely buy them because of a bad rating.
Here is my choice...

You're one of the few yeses I've seen! I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but part of loving reading is taking the ones we love and having a few of ones we don't :) I've had Glow on my TBR list for awhile now, interesting to hear one more mix in the reviews!

I don't think I've ever done it for now but I'm curious aometimes about a book, but if I buy it it's not about the review, it's just a cover or a synopsis.
ReplyDeleteHere is mine
Another aussie :D
ReplyDeleteI had bought Glow too, and it wasn't what I was expecting, and didn't like it as much as I thought I would.

See, that's why I don't buy books with (mostly) negative reviews. Truth though is that there are readers who won't like the awesome books as well. For example, did you know that there are haters of the TMI series? Yeah, for reals.

Your blog is gorgeous! Love it!
ReplyDeleteAt least you gave the book a try and made up your own mind rather than following the crowd!

Hahahaha great answer! If I hear too many bad things about a book I usually reconsider buying it, and check out the first sample chapters to see it for myself. But buying just because of a bad review? Don't think so!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is lovely! New follower!

I don't think I've seen many bad reviews for that book, btw I loved it!

I, for one, cannot stop a book once a start. It may be a year later, but I always finish it because I feel obligated to the author's work and my own integrity.
ReplyDeleteGreat answer.

Oh now mixed reviews is different! ;) I have bought a book I was curious about with mixed reviews!

I have never read a book because it received a negative review. Negative reviews wouldn't stop me from reading a book though. Happy Easter. New follower and I'm an aussie blogger too.

DeleteIf I still want to check it out despite a bad review I typically check it out from my library. :)

Hey Celine! Thanks so much for visiting and following my blog yesterday, I'm glad to have found your blog and am now a proud new follower:) I haven't ever bought a book based on a bad review, but I've had plenty of bad reviews make me super curious about reading a book. I always like wondering whether or not I'll have the same reaction:) Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
ReplyDeleteI honestly haven't purposefully bought any book with a negative review. I do, however, get them from the library.
ReplyDeleteNew follower also hopping thru! http://gizmosreviews.blogspot.com/
Happy Friday!
I have never bought a book purposely after hearing bad things about it but I have to finish everything I start, even if I don't like. I always hope that somehow they will get better, and I hate not knowing how they end. LOL :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Glow either. Only read a few chapters and got rid of it.
ReplyDeleteThe Cait Files
Haha. I definitely don't pick up books BECAUSE of a negative review but sometimes a snarky review may make me check it out and I might decide it's the kind of book I'd like to read!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Celine! :)
mhm, that's an interesting point...I thought I wouldn't read a book with a negative review, but then again if I really want to know if the book is as bad as it sounds in the review I might pick it up, too.

Sometimes a bad review will make me curious enough to see what I will make of the book myself! Obviously I don't buy nearly as many books based on bad reviews as good ones but there have been the occasional ones! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat post!! I usually will just get the book from the library instead of buying it!!
ReplyDeleteHappy reading and check out my follow Friday!!

I didn't know Glow had mixed reviews XD. Oh, well - I'm still quite eager to read it. I've had it on my shelf for ages. One day, I'll get to reading!

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on Glow as well. Still rather curious about it, just to see why people don't like it. :P

I really want to read The Selection because there is so much drama surrounding this book, and I need to find out why for myself. New follower through GFC and email.
ReplyDeletehaha I'm the same sometimes the bad reviews make me curious. Although sometimes I do end up loving the book and sometimes I don't. I kind of liked Glow although it was way disturbing!!!!

Hi,
ReplyDeleteNew follower. Your answer is exactly why I wouldn't buy a book just because it had bad reviews. I wouldn't want to waste my time or money on a book that I didn't enjoy, when there are so many books I want to read!!
My FF: http://bellesbookbag.blogspot.com/2012/04/feature-follow-friday.html
Ahahaa! I'm not sure I've ever BOUGHT one... Hmmm... maybe I've bought eBooks?? ...
ReplyDeleteNo... I seriously can't think of any. Hehe! I love that you bought it. Sucks you didn't like it, though :(
