Summary from Goodreads:
Against all odds, 17-year-old Gene has survived in a world where humans have been eaten to near extinction by the general population. The only remaining humans, or hepers as they are known, are housed in domes on the savannah and studied at the nearby Heper Institute. Every decade there is a government sponsored hunt. When Gene is selected to be one of the combatants he must learn the art of the hunt but also elude his fellow competitors whose suspicions about his true nature are growing.
Cover:
The guy in the cover is similar to how I imagine Gene looks like. The background is really creepy and reflects the concept of 'The Hunt' in the book! I also like the eye-catching red colour of the title's font.

Story:

When the sun goes down. Start running.

I am definitely surprised at how much I actually enjoyed reading this book. The summary of the book did not quite interest me but I know some people enjoyed it and thought I should give this book a go. And wow, The Hunt was quite an experience.

Even after finishing this book, I still have chills. The Hunt is set in a world where humans or better known as hepers, are extinct. There are still 'people' living in this world but they are predators. They do not drink water. They drink blood. Now our main character is a human, but he lives among these predators by pretending to be a predator himself. But Gene needs to be extra careful, because one slip can cost his life.

Andrew Fukuda's world-building is fantastic and he explores the concept of The Hunt itself very well. His writing is gripping, edgy and makes me scared of the world of The Hunt. The book is filled with heart-pounding actions and surprising scenes. The ending makes me desperate for the next book in the series!

Characters:
One thing I enjoyed the most is Andrew Fukuda's characterization of Gene. He portrays him really well. The way Gene had to survive among these predators by trying to be one himself must have been difficult. He must not sweat, he wears fake fangs, he always cleans himself every day to get rid of the body odour of a heper. His character is voiced really well and I am able to understand the events happening throughout the book with his narration. I also really like Ashley June. She is a surprising character and I love the way Gene always call her with her full name. The other characters such as the hepers in the book are interesting to read about as well. The predators in this book are very scary. When they are hungry, their saliva will drip, just like an animal and they completely scare me!

Overall:
The Hunt is a gripping book, filled with heart-pounding actions and set in a terrifying world where humans are extinct. To survive, you must know that when the sun goes down, the predators will find you. Andrew Fukuda delivers a great narration through the character Gene and I think fans of dystopian will also enjoy reading this book!
4 Forget-Me-Not flowers for The Hunt!

  6. I want to kick myself in my own face for not reading this book sooner. It expired on my Adobe Reader -- BOO! I'm just going to have resolve the matter and buy it so that I can read it. FINALLY. It just looks too awesome for words. And we all know how much I like vampires, even the really freaky kind that are almost not vampires they're so weird. xD

Perhaps I should borrow it from the library to find out how I feel about it. I'm glad that you liked it! And that you wrote this great review about it ^^

  9. Awesome review! I really want to read this one. I think it sounds like an intense, fascinating read with a great premise. I'm sure not all aspects of the book will be realistic enough, but that doesn't really bother me if I like the book enough...and I DO love when a book has some great characters. Is it just me or does the model of the cover look a bit like Chris Hemsworth? Yay. LOL

  10. The world in this book definitely sounds like the most interesting part for me. Very creepy and I can just imagine all the scary predators out there. I'm also a big dystopian fan, so the fact you think this would appeal to dystopian lovers is a plus! Great review, glad you enjoyed this one more than you thought you would :).

  11. This is one I have been wavering on. I guess I just have to be in the right mood for a dark gritty dystopian. I know I would certainly enjoy the world building!

  15. I read the book earlier this year and I found it to be only okay. The hepers were definitely very creepy! I think I remember not being able to connect with Gene which was why I couldn't fully appreciate the book. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it so much more than I did, Celine. :)
    Wonderful review! :)

  18. Eee, Celine! Your changed your layout! IT'S SO PRETTY!! <3

I am so glad you gave this a go, even though you weren't entirely sold on the summary. I LOVE when a book surprises me when I'm not expecting to enjoy it so much! I felt this was something so delightfully different and creepy and engaging! And it makes you think just as much as it makes you shudder or grip the pages waiting to see what will happen next. And I so agree with you on the brilliant worldbuilding. Fantastic review! <3 Bring on the sequel... especially with how it ended!

  20. I don't know if I'm going to read this one... not because it doesn't sound good because it does. But because the main character has the same name as my step-dad and that cover model looks like a younger version... NO JOKE. I'm glad you enjoyed this book though, great review!

And you changed your layout... it looks great! (:
