Summary from Goodreads:
Our mother was a witch too, but she hid it better.
I miss her.
To me, the magic feels like a curse. According to the Brothers, it's devil-sent. Women who can do magic-they're either mad or wicked. So I will do everything in my power to protect myself and my sisters. Even if it means giving up my life - and my true love.
Because if the Brothers discover our secret, we're destined for the asylum, or prison . . . or death.

Cover:
I adore the cover. It's so gorgeous. I love how the girl looks up at us in that position and how there are flowers on top of her head! I also love the font of the title. It's WICKED!

What if giving up true love means saving your family?
Cate is a witch. Her mother is a witch. Her 2 sisters are witches. When her mother died, Cate is responsible to keep her sisters and their secrets safe from the Brotherhood who will not hesitate to kill witches. Not only that, Cate also had to choose a right man to marry soon. Paul, her childhood friend might be her only choice though Cate is not sure if she loves him. But when she met Finn Belastra, she never thought she'd fall in love with him. The problem is, Finn is not a scholar or a from a well-respected family, he is just a gardener in Cate's house. Is their love possible? Can Cate keep her sisters safe from the Brotherhood?
So it's been a while since I read a book about witches. I can't even remember my last book about witches but anyway, I REALLY REALLY LOVE BORN WICKED!!! I loved it from the very first page until the end. It was such an enthralling read. I couldn't stop reading and I just had to finish it quickly! The story is so amazing. The book is written from Cate's POV as she deals with her sisters, making sure their secrets are safe, protecting themselves from the Brotherhood, Cate finding out more about witches from her mother's diary and friends and how she needs to marry someone soon and ends up falling in love for Finn. THE FEATHERY SCENE! I love it SO MUCH. After I finished the book, I just had to re-read that scene because it's so beautiful and romantic. Jessica Spotswood's descriptions of everything in the story feels so alive that I can actually imagine different scenes in my head. This book also makes me feel scared of the Brotherhood!
But the ending was so SAD! My heart completely breaks for both Cate and Finn. The ending makes me want to read the sequel now because I want to find out the fate of these 2 awesome characters!
Characters:
Cate, Cate, Cate, I feel you. I have a sister and it does take a lot of energy and strength to take care of them and make sure they're safe. But Cate, you certainly did a great job because you protected your sisters from the beginning of the book until the end. I adore you and I need your patience and guidance to take care of my sister!
Finn Belastra. You are the most nerdy cutest handsome guy I've ever read about. I love your spectacles, I love how you love to read books, I love everything about you! And the FEATHER SCENE! It's PERFECT. Seriously, it's PERFECT! You and Cate are PERFECT for each other!
Those 2 are definitely my favourite characters in the book. I also loved reading about Cate's sisters, particularly Tess. Tess is so young yet she is very skillful, gentle, sweet and adorable. I am really annoyed by Maura because she is very stubborn and the one who fights regularly with Cate. She is also a very surprising character and you'll know what I mean when you read the book! Overall, the characters are really enjoyable to read!
Overall:
Born Wicked is an enthralling tale about witches, society's expectations, love and keeping your loved ones safe. This is an awesome 2012 debut and I highly recommend you to read it if you love paranormal themed books! Born Wicked is BORN WICKED!

Check out the book trailer! FEATHERS! SO PRETTY!
HEE!! Love that you mentioned the feather scene. It was one of my favourite from the book *sigh* Oh man, that ENDING. What is it with authors leaving us on terrible, heart-wrenching endings lately? But at the same time... we sadistically love it :D
ReplyDeleteI loved Cate too. She's such a strong, admirable heroine <3

Oh my goodness. CELINE! WHY AND HOW DO YOU MAKE EVERYTHING SOUND SO EFFING GOOD?! YOU KILL ME. I love the idea of the sister relationship, and I love that you related to it! I don't have any sisters myself (I have a younger brother--2 years younger... err, I have an older stepbrother and stepsister, but we're not really close ;D), but I love it!
ReplyDeleteAaah, this one sounds WONDERFUL. Can't wait to get my hands on it! ♥
